Terribel news for the Icelandic economy if capelin (Mallotus villosus) is not to be found in Icelandic waters second year around. Last year, 2019, was the first year that no quota on Capelin catching was issued since Icelanders started fishing for Capelin in 1963.
The search by the Marine & Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland (MFRI) this year has shown that little was found of capelin in Icelandic waters. Something was found west of the Kolbeinshrygg and out of the West Fjords, but in small quantities. The MFRI´s search leader said in a news release yesterday that the expedition does not set high expectations for the future.
The MFRI's next search expedition will begin in early February.
