We Look Forward to Sharing Your Organization's Story at the Members Forum
We are thrilled to have you join us for the highly anticipated 2023 World Data System (WDS) Members Forum, which will be held on Sunday, 22 October leading up to the Festival of Data in Salzburg!
As a valued WDS Regular or Network member, we kindly remind you that the WDS Bylaws require a brief 3-5 minute presentation from each participating organization at the Forum. Even if you are unable to attend in person, you have the opportunity to submit a slideshow or video recording. Other member categories are encouraged to participate as well! We can't wait to hear your organizations' stories!
To submit your presentation, please follow the instructions below:
If you will be attending remotely, kindly email your slideshow or a recording of your presentation to no later than 9 October.
Please utilize the linked PowerPoint template for your slides, ensuring a consistent and professional appearance.
Attach your presentation file, video file (in MP4 format), or provide a video link. In your email, include your name, organization name, and presentation title. To facilitate organization, rename your files using the following convention: "Name of your organization_last name_UPDATE2023," separated by underscores. For instance, WDS-IPO_Bernabeo_UPDATE2023.
Your presentation should cover the following aspects:
- An introduction to your organization.
- Major milestones achieved over the past year.
- Plans and objectives for the upcoming year.
- Key challenges you anticipate facing.

SciDataCon 2023: An Integral Part of IDW
We are excited to highlight the program for SciDataCon 2023, part of International Data Week in Salzburg and online from 23 to 26 October 2023. As a key component to the Festival of Data, SciDataCon aims to celebrate and explore the transformative power of data science.
The overarching theme for SciDataCon, as well as International Data Week as a whole, is a Festival of Data.
SciDataCon is comprised of seven high-level themes that culminate in the overall celebration of data.
By encompassing these diverse themes, SciDataCon 2023 aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation in data science, ultimately contributing to a transformed world.

Here is a look at the Program Overview:
Day 1: 23 October 2023
The first day of SciDataCon 2023 will kick off with the IDW 2023 Opening Plenary Session titled "Spatial Data Science: Geographic Context Matters." Following the plenary session, participants will have the opportunity to engage in sessions covering topics such as PID provision, data ethics, semantic interoperability, data collaboration at the national scale, AI/ML, climate risk mapping, institutional/strategy-oriented approaches, and social science.
Day 2: 24 October 2023
Day 2 will begin with networking tea and coffee breaks, fostering connections among attendees. The plenary session, "Inclusivity in Open Science while Advancing Research Assessment and Career Pathway Impact," will shed light on the importance of inclusivity in scientific research. The program will then continue with sessions on Copernicus data for water, participatory mapping, domain-specific metadata, cross-domain perspectives, open data for disaster risk reduction, data discovery and reuse across disciplines, data stewards and competency centers, and data infrastructures.
Day 3: 25 October 2023
On the third day, participants will once again have the opportunity to network during tea and coffee breaks. Sessions will cover topics such as interoperability and interconnectivity in developing regions, open science infrastructures, data linking and knowledge graphs, open public data and communication, and closing the loop of open data publishing in the humanities. The day will culminate in the plenary session, "Data and Global Challenges: Data, Science, Trust, and Policy," which will provide insights into the intersection of data, science, trust, and policy.
Day 4: 26 October 2023
The final day of SciDataCon 2023 will feature sessions on writing a roadmap to success for Copernicus data, best practices in participatory mapping, envisioning solutions through cross-domain interoperability frameworks, and enhancing data discovery and reuse across disciplines. The conference will conclude with an on-site poster exhibition, networking, and reception.

The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is set to host its 21st Plenary as part of International Data Week 2023 in Salzburg, Austria. This highly anticipated event brings together a global community of data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to promote open sharing and re-use of data. The RDA Plenary serves as a platform for developing and supporting global infrastructure that facilitates data sharing and collaboration across various disciplines. With a focus on advancing data-driven research, the 21st Plenary promises to be a significant milestone in the journey towards a more interconnected and data-driven world.
Connecting the Data Community:
The RDA 21st Plenary aims to bridge the gap between diverse stakeholders in the data community. It provides a neutral space where individuals and organizations from over 145 countries can come together to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and collaborate on developing innovative solutions for data management and interoperability. The Plenary facilitates discussions and interactions between researchers, data stewards, infrastructure providers, and policymakers, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to addressing data challenges.
Key Themes and Sessions:
The Plenary program encompasses a wide range of themes and sessions designed to address the evolving landscape of data sharing. Experts from various domains will present their insights and experiences, shedding light on topics such as agriculture, biodiversity, biomedical sciences, digital humanities, and more. Workshops, presentations, and interactive sessions will explore emerging trends, technologies, and standards in data management, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary research and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Collaborative Opportunities:
One of the primary objectives of the RDA 21st Plenary is to promote collaboration and foster partnerships among participants. Webinar Recap: Data Experts on Career Development: Perspectives on Data Management Across Time, Disciplines, and Research Environments with Bruce Wilson
We are delighted to share with you the recap of our webinar “Data Experts on Career Development: Perspectives on Data Management Across Time, Disciplines, and Research Environments”, featuring Bruce Wilson, a group leader and data scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Wilson is an expert in data management and informatics, with a diverse background in physics, engineering, biology, and environmental sciences. He has over 20 years of experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and projects in various domains.
Wilson started his career as a chemist who found himself drowning in data as a result of work in industrial process analytical chemistry and some early successes in high throughput research methods. His work building tools to meet his own data management needs led to building tools to help other scientists across a wide range of domains manage, find, and use data. Wilson presently serves as the Manager for the NASA-funded Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC) and as the Group Leader for ORNL’s Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics Group.
In this webinar, Wilson shared his thoughts about successes and challenges as an individual contributor and a leader in data management and scientific cyberinfrastructure, based on a career that includes work in industry, government labs, and academia. He discussed the importance of data management and informatics as an enabling discipline to help data providers and users by reducing friction and making connections easier. He emphasized the value of focusing on interoperability, which is the ability of different systems or components to exchange and use information.
Wilson also provided thoughts on leadership, which he defined as influencing others to achieve a common goal. He discussed some key aspects, such as having a shared understanding of success, providing needed resources, celebrating successes, holding people accountable, and serving others. He also discussed lifelong learning and growth, which he said are essential for leaders to adapt to changing situations and challenges.
The talk covered the value of data over time, highlighting that early involvement enables preserving more value, and that different disciplines may see data value change differently over time. For example, Wilson explained that in physics, data may lose value quickly as new experiments are conducted, while in biology or environmental sciences, data may gain value over time as new insights or patterns emerge.
During the Q&A sessions from two different time zones, which have been combined into this comprehensive recording, Wilson offered insights on transitioning from individual contributor to leadership roles, the value of networks and mentors, overcoming the imposter syndrome, and the importance of humility in leadership. He also answered questions from the audience about data management challenges, best practices, tools, and resources.

Dr. Maui Hudson's research focuses on Māori data sovereignty and indigenous data governance. During the webinar, he will delve into the practical application of the CARE principles for indigenous data governance in the context of ecology and biodiversity research.
The CARE principles, which stand for Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, and Ethics, provide a framework for conducting research with indigenous communities in a manner that respects their rights, interests, and values. Dr. Hudson will share valuable insights on how these principles can guide data collection, stewardship, and utilization in ecological studies.
Promoting Ethical and Equitable Research:
Given that much ecological and biodiversity research takes place on indigenous lands, it is crucial to ensure that these studies honor indigenous rights and values.
