The 7th Arctic Policy Forum, titled “The Arctic and Innovation”, took place on Tuesday, 11 December in BEXCO, Busan, hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (Director Yang Chang-ho), the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Forum was an event of the Arctic Cooperation Week organized by KMI and and the Institute for Polar Research in partnership with 12 organizations.
The 7th Arctic Policy Forum held on this day included Director Yang Chang-ho of KMI, Chief Han Kee-joon of the Marine Industry Division of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Chairman Tero Vauraste of the Arctic Economic Council, and the ambassadors of Canada, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. Participants emphasized innovation as a solution to the various challenges facing the Arctic, and introduced and discussed various innovations in policy and in industry practice.
In particular, KMI had a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Arctic Portal (Halldór Jóhannsson, Secretary General), a representative Arctic information provider to systematically secure various Arctic information and data and to provide it to the people and the government. *The Arctic Portal was established in 2006 in collaboration with the Arctic Council Working Group and currently provides comprehensive information on the Arctic in partnership with more than 50 partners.
KMI officials said that KMI will construct Arctic statistics based on the MOU with the Arctic Portal, obtain accurate information on the Arctic, and provide to domestic stakeholders that require them. In the future, KMI plans to expand its cooperation network with potential information providers, thereby solidifying its circumpolar information and knowledge sharing system.
