The United Nations have proclaimed 11 February the International Day of Women and Girls in Science aiming to inspire and engage women and girls in science and STEM education. It is still the case, unfortunately, that women and girls are excluded from participating fully in science.
According to the UN at present less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women and only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related (Science, Technoloy, Engineering and Mathematics) fields in higher education. As jobs of the future will be driven mostly by technology and innovation we need to encourage girls to study those fields so the overall gender gap will not widen. The gender gap in STEM fields can have deep implications for the future global economy. Lets celebrate this day and encourage women and girls in science by helping them remove all barriers that are holding them back.
