Reykjanes Peninsula eruption 2024

An eruption has started northeast of Sýlingarfell after 6am today the 8th of February 2024. An earthquake swarm had started in the magma intrusion north of the town of Grindavík around half an hour earlier.

The fissure is 3km long and therefore slightly shorter than the one in December 2023. Experts say that this eruption is very similar to the eruption in January 2024 and expect it to last only for a few days.

This eruption is located a little bit norther than the previous eruptions and therefore the town of Grindavík shouldn't be in any danger. The protective walls that were built in January 2024 should be able to handle any lava if it manages to reach the town of Grindavík.
