IASC Bulletin 2024 cover

At the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) Council Meeting during Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW2024) in Edinburgh, IASC released its 2024 Bulletin, reporting on the IASC-supported activities over the past years.

In it, the five IASC Working Groups (Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Marine, Social & Human, Terrestrial) share exciting scientific highlights of their international and interdisciplinary work, and IASC leadership and Fellows share their perspectives on working with IASC.

In the lead-up to its 35th anniversary in 2025, the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) is coordinating a multi-year planning process for the Fourth International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV) lasting from 2022 until 2026. Chapter 3 is fully dedicated to the ICARP IV Process, its Community-Wide Engagement and its Research Priority Teams (RPTs).

In Chapter 4, the Bulletin provides comprehensive information on the 5th International Polar Year (2032-2033). The 5th IPY (2032-33) will bring the longstanding tradition of organizing regular IPYs to an era of unprecedented need for large-scale coordinated research on polar and global changes.

About IASC

The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) is a non-governmental, international scientific organization. The Founding Articles committed IASC to pursue a mission of encouraging and facilitating cooperation in all aspects of Arctic research, in all countries engaged in Arctic research and in all areas of the Arctic region. Overall, IASC promotes and supports leading-edge interdisciplinary research in order to foster a greater scientific understanding of the Arctic region and its role in the Earth system.

Rather than defining human and environmental boundaries, IASC tries to bridge those boundaries. IASC is also committed to recognizing that Traditional Knowledge, Indigenous Knowledge, and “Western” scientific knowledge are coequal and complementary knowledge systems, all of which can and should inform the work of IASC.
