A groundbreaking development in the fight against climate change unfolds as Mammoth, the world's largest air purifier, opens in the Geothermal Garden in Hellisheiði, Iceland. Named Mammoth, the cleaning plant is operated by the Swiss company Climeworks, a global leader in carbon removal via direct air capture technology, in collaboration with local partners.
Surpassing its predecessors, Mammoth boasts a capture capacity of up to 36,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. This monumental facility utilizes cutting-edge technology to filter CO2 from the atmosphere, which is then sequestered underground using Carbfix's innovative technology.
Carbfix receives the CO2 captured by the plant and sequesters it permanently and safely by injecting it into deep basaltic rock formations, where the CO2 rapidly turns into stable carbon minerals through natural processes. This collaboration between Climeworks and Carbfix highlights the importance of extensive capture of CO2 directly from the atmosphere, alongside rapid emission reductions, to achieve the world's climate targets.
Climeworks and Carbfix have a long-standing collaboration on permanent carbon removals in Iceland. Climeworks' smaller direct air capture plant, Orca, has been in operation at Hellisheiði since the fall of 2021. The carbon removals of Climeworks and Carbfix in Iceland are verified by independent third-party DNV.
Furthermore, for over a decade, Carbfix has permanently stored CO2 emissions captured from ON Power's geothermal power plant at Hellisheidi. Last year, Carbfix's pilot plant started storing emissions captured from ON Power's geothermal power plant at Nesjavellir.
Mammoth's launch signifies a significant step forward in the quest for innovative carbon removal technologies, aligning with broader ambitions in the climate action realm. As part of Climeworks' vision to achieve megaton carbon removal capacity by 2030 and gigaton scale by 2050, Mammoth exemplifies the dedication to combating global warming.
