On Tuesday 8th September, the Arctic Economic Council (AEC) Secretariat was officially opened in Tromsø by the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende. The news has been released on the social media, both by the Norwegian MFA (via Twitter) and both by the Arctic Council (via Facebook), and by the Barents Observer.

ARCTIC OCEAN — U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, homeported in Seattle, arrived at the North Pole Sept. 5, 2015, becoming the first U.S. surface ship to do so unaccompanied. This is also only the fourth time a U.S. surface vessel has ever reached the North Pole, and the first since 2005.

A new journal is emerging to be published shortly. The Icelandic Arctic Journal is a non-peer reviewed, interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder and cross-sectoral platform for those interested and involved in the Arctic.

The Arctic Energy Summit 2015 will be held in Fairbanks, Alaska, on September 28-30. Registration is open. The Arctic Energy Summit 2015 is hosted by the Institute of the North in cooperation with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Iceland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On August 21st, the construction of the Norwegian Polarled gas pipeline, which will bring gas from the Norwegian sea to Europe, crossed the Arctic Circle. As Statoil reports, "the 482-kilometre long and 36-inch (91.4 cm) wide pipeline will run from Nyhamna in western Norway to the Aasta Hansteen field in the Norwegian Sea.

Yesterday, August 24th, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague ruled in favor of the 30 Greenpeace activists that in the in the morning of 18 September 2013 used the vessel Arctic Sunrise to stage a protest action at the Russian offshore oil production platform Prirazlomnaya, located in the Barents Sea in Russia's EEZ.
