The Canadian newspaper "Embassy" has recently reported that the Canadian Government will be watching closely the first cruise ship sailing the Northwest Passage this summer. Arctic scholars are still debating whether the voyage of the first cruise ship going to sail the Northwest Passage this summer is 'entirely safe". Concerns regard navigating an icy, dangerous route, safety, pollution, but also the impacts of tourism on small northern communities.

As known, flights between this High Arctic community and Ottawa can cost more than $6,000: “phenomenal costs” of transportation and food are an “impediment” for the people of the High Arctic. The first ever UArctic Congress will be held from Monday, September 12th through to Friday, September 16th in St. Petersburg, Russia, hosted by Saint Petersburg State University. Registration for the inaugural UArctic Congress 2016 is now open (early bird registration ends May 31, 2016, and late registration ends August 21, 2016).
