Polar Data Forum VThe fifth Polar Data Forum (PDF V) is scheduled to take place from 30 October to 3 November 2023, at the Aurora Innovation Centre in Cambridge, UK. The deadline for registration is 11 October.

This significant event, hosted by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), will focus on the crucial aspects of improving large-scale data exchange and interoperability within the field of polar research.  Remote attendance options for participants worldwide is provided.

The forum will encompass a wide array of themes, fostering discussions on topics such as knowledge mobilization and decision-making, collaborative data production, FAIR data principles specific to polar regions, vocabularies, semantic interoperability, data policies, data for modeling and remote sensing, logistical information management, barriers to data sharing, and user needs, among others. Additionally, the event will delve into emerging aspects of polar research, including new ships and real-time data acquisition in low-connectivity areas, and the development of systems for digitally enabled observations, as well as tools and technologies for efficient data management and delivery.

The Polar Data Forum V is a key gathering for the polar data community, providing a platform for data holders to come together and harness the potential of data. It comprises two main components: the Conference, which explores the convergence of funding, policy, and data through presentations and poster presentations, and Workshop Sessions & Hackathons, aimed at fostering collaborative dialogues to drive progress on shared objectives.

PDF V is uniquely positioned in the calendar, following International Data Week (IDW) to be held in Salzburg, Austria, from 23 to 26 October 2023. The event is co-organized by a consortium of polar partners, including the Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management (SCADM), Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON), the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), and the World Data System, among others, signifying a global commitment to advancing polar data research.

The schedule for PDF V includes a series of workshops and hackathons on 30 October, fostering practical engagement and problem-solving, followed by a 3-day plenary conference from 31 October to 2 November. The closing day, 3 November, will feature meetings of the Arctic Data Committee (ADC) and the SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management (SCADM).

For those interested in remote participation, PDF V offers an opportunity to join this vital discourse on polar data exchange and cooperation, allowing for a broader and more inclusive engagement within the global polar research community.
