Arctic Circle, the world’s largest international platform dedicated to dialogue on the future of the Arctic, has officially announced the appointment of Dr. Sara Olsvig as Senior Emissary for the Central Arctic Ocean.

Dr. Olsvig, an Inuk leader from Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), brings decades of experience in politics, Indigenous rights, leadership, academia and international advocacy. In her new role, she will draw on this background to promote democratic and inclusive dialogue on the future of the Central Arctic Ocean, contributing to discussions aimed at supporting a sustainable and responsible approach to the region.

Her appointment will be officially introduced during the 2026 Arctic Circle Assembly, taking place in Reykjavík from 8 to 10 October. During the Assembly, Dr. Olsvig will moderate a dedicated roundtable discussion on the Central Arctic Ocean and participate as a speaker on the plenary stage.

Objectives of the appointment and strategic context

Under the auspices of Arctic Circle’s global network, Dr. Olsvig’s mandate will focus on fostering high-level dialogue on the future of the Central Arctic Ocean. A key part of this work will be identifying the most critical debates and knowledge gaps related to the region, while bringing together different perspectives and areas of expertise.

The initiative will consider scientific and environmental issues alongside legal and geopolitical questions, as well as security, economic and Indigenous perspectives. Bringing these dimensions together is intended to support a broader and more inclusive discussion on the challenges and developments affecting the Central Arctic Ocean.

Climate change, evolving geopolitical dynamics, growing interest in environmental protection and increasing attention to access to resources have placed the Central Arctic Ocean at the centre of international discussions. In this context, the demand for open and inclusive dialogue has grown, together with the need for a more structured and strategic approach to the issues shaping the future of the region.

Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Senior Emissary of Arctic Circle and former Prime Minister of Iceland from 2017 to 2024, welcomed the appointment, stating:

About Sara Olsvig

Dr. Sara Olsvig has extensive experience in politics, academia, leadership and human rights.

• International roles and representation: She served as International Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council from 2022 to 2026. In 2024, she was also a member of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals.
• Parliamentary and government experience: She served as a member of the Parliament of Denmark from 2011 to 2015 and of the Parliament of Kalaallit Nunaat from 2013 to 2018. During her parliamentary career, she also chaired the Standing Committee of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region. From 2016 to 2018, she served as Vice Premier and Minister for Social Affairs, Families, Gender Equality and Justice, and contributed to the work of Kalaallit Nunaat’s Constitutional Commission and Human Rights Council.
• Academic background: Her academic work focuses on international relations, the Arctic and Kalaallit Nunaat’s foreign policy. She holds a Master of Science in Anthropology from the University of Copenhagen and a PhD in Arctic Studies from Ilisimatusarfik – University of Greenland.
• Awards: She received the Womenomics Inclusion Award in 2023 and the Arctic Encounter Friend of the Far North Award in 2026.
