The second webinar of the Arctic Expert-to-Expert Initiative, titled “Arctic expert-to-expert cooperation for the future,” was part of the Nord University High North Dialogue 2023. It took place on April 18th and streamed online. The primary focus of the event was to underscore the vital importance of Arctic expert-to-expert cooperation, particularly given the climate crisis and the complex geopolitical circumstances faced by the region.

251 applications from around 60 countries were received for the first 10 Grímsson´s Fellows. The 10 chosen fellows are invited to stay for 2-6 weeks in the House of Grímur, where former President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was born and his family lived. The house is in the historic town of Ísafjörður, the capital of the beautiful Westfjords region in Iceland.

After 30 years of successful cooperation,Russia has officially withdrawn from the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) a collaboration platform in the Arctic Region functioning in many ways similar to the Arctic Council. The Council activities have been on hold since spring 2022. In a formal statement sent to all the foreign ministers of the member countries of the BEAC on September 18, 2023, the Foreign Ministry of Russia declared Russia's official withdrawal from the council.

The World Food Forum and the World Food Programme (WFP) have joined forces to combat food waste by launching the "50 Days to Fight Food Waste" challenge. This initiative takes the form of a game known as FREERICE, where participants answer questions to accumulate grains. The objective is to collect over 50 million rice grains within 50 days!

In a statement by the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INGG SB RAS), the north magnetic pole of the Earth is shifting towards the Arctic coast of Russia. Year-round observations will soon be conducted at the Samoylov Island Research Station in the delta of the Lena River in Sakha Republic, Russia, on this phenomenon in a specially installed magnetic observatory.

The lack of sufficient and qualified infrastructure, including ice-class fleet of carriers and support ice-breakers, is hindering the development of the Northern Sea Route in the Arctic stated the head of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, Alexei Chekunkov, in an interview with RBC Russian media on the eve of this years Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia. He further stated that there are not enough shipyards in the world to build the needed fleet.

Activists trying to prevent the departure of whaling boats from Reykjavík Harbor. The police were called to the Reykjavík Harbor in Iceland this morning due to protests against the intended departure of two whaling ships of Hvalur ltd.
