The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) functions as the Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) overseeing the North East Atlantic which stands as one of the globe's richest fishing grounds.
The geographic scope defined by the NEAFC convention (known as the Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in North-East Atlantic Fisheries) extends from the southernmost tip of Greenland, spanning eastward to the Barents Sea, and southward to Portugal.
Initially adopted on the November 18, 1980, the Convention became enforceable in 1982. It succeeded the earlier 1959 North-East Atlantic Fisheries Convention.
NEAFC's core aim revolves around ensuring the enduring preservation and optimal use of the fisheries within the Convention Area, which engenders sustainable economic, environmental, and social advantages. With this purpose in view, NEAFC enacts management measures for diverse fish stocks and employs control mechanisms to assure their effective implementation. Taking scientific advice from ICES (the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea).
Moreover, NEAFC establishes measures aimed at safeguarding other segments of the marine ecosystem against potential detrimental impacts arising from fishing activities.
