Volcanic eruption Sundhnkur Iceland December 2023

On the evening of 18th December 2023, at approximately 10:00 PM, a volcanic eruption started in close proximity to the town of Grindavík, Iceland.

The volcanic crack has been measured to be about 4 km long and the amount of lava coming is estimated to be many times more compared to the couple of eruptions over the last few years. So far the lava is not heading towards the town of Grindavík, the crack does not seem to be getting any bigger and experts are generally happy with the location of the eruption when it comes to dangers to human settlements.

The area where the eruption is occurring is known as Sundhnúksgígar, a name challenging to pronounce, reminiscent of the linguistic complexity of the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, 2010.

The National TV of Iceland (RÚV) is providing live streams from the eruption site, offering viewers a firsthand glimpse into this natural phenomenon.
