ARCUS logoThe Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS) announces a call for nominations for our Board of Directors election. There are four seats up for election in a vote of the ARCUS Membership Council that will take place in December. Terms will be three years and begin in January 2022.

COP26 Halldór Jóhannsson interview

Halldór Jóhannsson, the general director of Arctic Portal was in a panel interview on China Global Television Network (CGTN) Friday November 12 talking about the COP26. In the interview, he mentioned the importance of activating and educating young people on climate and environmental issues, how to reach out to policymakers, and the conversion of knowledge from science to policy as per the Arctic Risk Platform by the Arctic Basecamp which the Arctic Portal team is a partner in.

We, the Clydebank Declaration signatories:

Recall the long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Nicole Biebow and Egill Thor Nielsson - European Polar Board

During the European Polar Board’s Autumn 2021 Plenary Meeting, held 27-29th October, Nicole Biebow, Member Representative for the Helmholtz Association, Germany, was elected as the new EPB Chair. Nicole will serve as Chair for an initial term until Autumn 2023, having previously completed two full terms as a member of the Executive Committee since Autumn 2017.

Earth Ice Cone - Climate Change

A photograph of a person licking the earth in the shape of an ice cream taken by an eighteen-year-old Icelandic girl, Íris Lilja Jóhannsdóttir, has won the youth prize in the European Environment Agency's competition Young Reporters for the Environment and the youth prize in the Climate Change PIX competition.

Billie Eilish and Rainn Wilson speak up for climate actionThe scientists from the group Arctic Basecamp got the music star Billie Eilish and the actor Rainn Wilson to call on the world leaders to stand together and take urgent action at the 26th U.N. COP26 climate summit to be held in Glasgow 31 October – 12 November.

Scientists discussing innovative technologies for Rehabilitation of the polluted arctic coastline at a conference in Moscow

An international conference on bioremediation (biological cleanup) of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of the Arctic coast was held in Moscow. The event was attended by leading scientists from Russia, Canada, the USA and Finland in the field of remediation of contaminated soil and water bodies. The discussion was held as part of the plan of major events in connection with the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021–2023, operated by the Roscongress Foundation.

ICE: Inspiration. Communication. Efforts

Entrepreneurs, creators, volunteers, activists, ethno and travel bloggers from different regions and countries will discuss environmental issues, urbanism, volunteer development, etc. and develop breakthrough projects at the Arctic Council Young Leaders Forum "ICE: Inspiration. Communication. Efforts", which will be held on December 6 - 9 in Siberia (in Salekhard city, Yamal). Registration for the Forum has been extended until 31 October 2021.
